Description
First produced in 1948, Scrabble has gone on to become the most famous and best loved word game in the world. It first appeared in the UK in 1953 using wooden letter tiles and it wasn't until the late 1950's that plastic letter tiles were introduced. This item is over 60 years old and is in good condition considering the decades of use this would have had. The box remains strong and intact although two corners have split, there is rubbing along the edges and at the corners, some surface damage and slight fading but this all goes to authenticate it's age. The lid has a very simple burgundy leatherette looking covering with a yellow and green circular sticker giving the title, manufacturer and stating this is the first edition with plastic tiles. Upon the sticker is written in pencil the original price of 21 shillings (about £35 today).  On the reverse of the lid are printed the instructions. On the inside the cardboard storage tray is in very good condition. All 100 thin, ivory coloured, lightweight plastic letter tiles with square indents on the back are present as are the four wooden letter racks. Even the factory inspection ticket is present. The game board is in an excellent clean condition. A great item for a collector of vintage games or Scrabble sets, as a prop in a production or 1950's themed room or as a fun way for the family to improve spelling and word power.
