Description
Before the advent of the moving picture, stereoscopes were the top home-based entertainment for Victorian and Edwardian families. Stereoscopes were used to view images in 3D. This particular stereoscope probably dates from the early 20th Century and with no makers marks it's difficult to assign a manufacturer. It's smaller proportions may indicate that this was designed specifically for children. Although made of a hardwood with brass fittings the stereoscope has a utilitarian look and feel. The handle can be folded up and the image holder can be slid off to make the stereoscope more compact for storage. Considering it's great age it still works perfectly well. A lovely item for a 3D viewer collector, as a display item, as a hands on historical item for schools or as the start of a stereoscope collection.
