Description
Joules Pale Ale originated in Stone, Staffordshire where beer has been brewed since the 16th Century. It was Augustine Monks who brewed beer at the Priory and marking each barrel with a red cross, after blessing it, to indicate superior quality. In 1867 the red cross was registered as a trade mark. Uniquely Joules is the only commercial enterprise to be allowed to use the red cross, now known more as an international symbol of aid, as the trade mark pre-dated the establishment of the Red Cross Organisation. The brewery went from strength to strength in face of still competition from other brewers in Burton on Trent also in Staffordshire. Joules beer was the first to be exported to the USA and was served on the ill fated maiden voyage of the Titanic. With success came envy from larger competitors who finally took it over. It was only in 2010 that Joules Brewery once again become fully independent but now based in Market Drayton, Shropshire. This promotional pack dates sometime from 1920's to the 1950's possibly slightly later. The box remains intact although is heavily worn. There is a split in one side and the top flap and tab are missing. At sometime adhesive tape has been used to keep the box intact and now removed the marks where this was can still be seen. On one side is a playing card stuck down to show the company name and trade mark, the other shows the card manufacturer's, Jarvis Porter Ltd, mark. The 52 cards are of standard size. Apart from the odd small mark or crease they remain in good condition considering the many decades they have been handled. On the reverse is the Joules name and trade make highlighted in gilding on a dark blue background. Sadly the jokers are missing but as such packs are rarely seen it's remarkable the cards themselves have survived so well. A great item for a vintage playing cards collector, for collectors of brewriana or for someone with a connection to Stone, Staffordshire.
